Patterson was nominated by colleagues Amy Tennant, Rob Silliman, and
Cindy Birdsall, who outlined a variety of attributes attesting to her
qualifications for the award, and describing her as exceptional. "While
it is difficult to pinpoint the exact attributes that make someone
exceptional, it seems to be some combination of knowledge, talent,
commitment, energy, enthusiasm, humor, maturity, and enjoyment of all
that she does. Melissa demonstrates all of these characteristics daily.
She is self-directed, conscientious, creative, organized, sensitive and
thoughtful."
Patterson has been an educator for 15 years, serving
as a Physical Education teacher at Linden for 13 years. During her
tenure she has served on the Wellness Committee, the Teacher Evaluation
Committee and has served as a Unified Sports coach. She is a team
trained mentor and a cooperating teacher. Patterson was selected as the
Connecticut Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and
Dance Teacher of the Year for 2016. She is an active member of the
Connecticut Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and
Dance, Shape America, and Let's Move.
When asked about her
philosophy of teaching, Patterson explained, "Providing a positive
environment in which each student has the opportunity to reach his or
her individual potential is imperative to me. I strive to make the
students feel comfortable in the physical education setting. The
students know that individual differences are appreciated. Respect and
empathy are the basis of everything we accomplish in physical
education."
As Teacher of the Year in Plainville, Patterson will
also participate as a candidate for Connecticut's 2018 Teacher of the
Year Program. Each district Teacher of the Year will be individually
recognized at an awards ceremony later this year hosted by the
Connecticut Department of Education.
"I just love watching Mrs.
Patterson with our scholars," said Linden Principal, Paula Eshoo. "She
is positive, patient, and a role model. She goes above and beyond to
help others and teach; with a ready smile and a supportive force for her
colleagues. Last year she even ran our kidathon on her birthday-it was
awesome! This is certainly a well-deserved honor."
"Melissa
Patterson is an amazing professional in every way. I am so proud of her
many accomplishments and recognitions. Plainville Community Schools is
very lucky to have her," commented Superintendent of Schools, Dr.
Maureen Brummett.
Patterson holds both a bachelor of science
degree and master of science degree from Central Connecticut State
University, with certification as a professional educator in Physical
Education and Health. She was honored at the June 12th Plainville Board
of Education meeting.
