The PHS National English Honor Society (NEHS) members, led by faculty member and advisor, Emily Wasley, are collaborating on a “Little Free Libraries” project. The project was approved for installation this past winter by the Plainville Town Council and Parks and Recreation groups, and when completed, will be placed at both Norton and Trumbull Parks in Plainville. The NEHS group raised over $1000 in donations from local businesses including TWM Development, the Plainville Funeral Home, PMC Industries, Innovative Medical Products, and Yummy Sushi as well as private donors, which allowed them to purchase the supplies for the two libraries. All donors will be recognized on a plaque on the side of the libraries. Students in PHS faculty member Dave Gaignard's Advanced Construction Technology class designed and constructed the libraries. Next week the NEHS members plan to take the pieces over to Linden Street School to be painted by students in Makerspace classes led by Amanda Levandowski and Jessica Hartung, with the assistance of NEHS seniors. The PHS Environmental Club members, led by faculty member John Czerwinski, plan to ultimately fill the planters with flowers and fruit-bearing plants. The libraries will be registered with the Little Free Libraries organization and included on their World Map. The group hopes to have the libraries installed before Memorial Day. The NEHS group is still accepting donations with the hope of building a third library somewhere in town.
