PHS Students Honored with "Student Rocks Award"
Posted on 05/23/2024
Plainville High School students Nikolas Dahlstrom and Igor Gomes  have been named recipients of the second semester “Student Rocks Award” recognizing their outstanding contributions to Plainville High School.

The Student Rocks Award was established by three teachers in 2010 as a way to honor those students who “do the right thing” every day without looking for acknowledgement. Once a semester, teachers nominate and then vote for  students they believe are worthy of this award. The students are honored, along with their family members and guests, at a staff meeting where they are awarded a book and presented with the Student Rocks plaque where their names are engraved. This plaque is displayed in the school’s awards showcase. It reads: “awarded to students who assume responsibility for their positive contributions to the school and community.” Faculty and staff comments submitted for the winning nominations are also shared during the awards presentation.

Dahlstrom, a junior, was nominated by high school faculty member Christina Roy with supporting comments shared by several faculty members.

“Nikolas Dahlstrom is a fine young gentleman who is truly altruistic. His care and concern for others is tremendous. He is always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. When Nik took my Acting Class, he was always willing to help others with their classwork or partner with them to do scene work together. Nikolas is a great student at PHS and a student who rocks,” said faculty member TJ Riccardo.

Gomes, a senior, was nominated by high school faculty member Leanne Butler, with supporting comments shared by several  faculty members.

“Since his first day in my U.S. History Class, Igor has been a terrific role model for other students–he is polite and respectful towards me and towards his classmates at all times.  The word “gentleman” first comes to mind when I think of Igor, as he truly is a young man of strong character with very good manners and a positive attitude,” noted faculty member Kerry Patterson.

Nikolas and Igor were honored on May 14th during a high school faculty meeting.

"It is an honor to have the opportunity to recognize our Student Rocks Award winners. PHS is lucky to have students like Nikolas and Igor. They are the perfect representatives of this award, and are simply amazing people,” noted PHS faculty member and Student Rocks Program Coordinator, Mikayla Wells.

“The Student Rocks Award Ceremony is something we look forward to twice each school year.  We recognize students who are outstanding members of our school community. Igor and Nikolas are very deserving of this award. They both exemplify the qualities and characteristics we value in our Blue Devil community. We are proud to recognize them for joining a long list of students that, quite simply, ROCK!” said Plainville High School Principal, Jennifer DeLorenzo.

“It is humbling and inspiring to see Igor and Nikolas leading the way,” said Superintendent of Schools, Brian Reas.
