Plainville High School students in the Unified Sports program recently participated in a “Week of Wellness” coordinated by Plainville High School Special Education faculty member, Sheila DiMinno. “The student athletes raised money for the Week of Wellness activities through the school store that they operate,” explained DiMinno. “Through the various wellness related activities, they were able to practice life skills and reinforce the need to take the time for self-care.”
The first wellness visit for the students featured a trip to Wilcox Technical School in Meriden, where students and staff opened their doors to provide haircuts, manicures and facials to all of the Plainville students who attended. Tuesday’s wellness focus was on learning to do things for others who have supported the Unified Program. As such, the Unified Team members baked 500 cookies for fellow Plainville High School students and staff as a thank you for supporting their school store. Additionally, Saint’s Restaurant of Plainville donated coffee for high school staff members. On Wednesday, the Unified Team members visited the “Fit for Life” gym in Southington and participated in yoga and meditation classes led by Plainville staff member, Samantha DeMauro. Thursday’s wellness visit was to Lola’s Bistro & Grill in Plainville, where students enjoyed a meal and practiced social skills.
“The Week of Wellness was the perfect opportunity for our students to focus on self-care and practice important related life skills. We are so appreciative of the local businesses and organizations that supported our students and the activities they facilitated,” said DiMinno.
“We are grateful to our community partners who made the Week of Wellness a huge success,” said Christina Kiley, Supervisor of Special Services.
“This week of wellness represents a wonderful combination of wellness skills and opportunities for our students to support the wellness of others while also expressing gratitude. I appreciate all the hard work and coordination that went into this by Mrs. DiMinno and everyone involved, including our wonderful community partners,” said Superintendent of Schools, Steven LePage.
